On July 12, 1873 a group of early settlers came together at the home of Mattias and Margaret Samuelson to form a Baptist Church with fourteen charter members. On this day, Mr. and Mrs. C. Lundgren were baptized in the nearby Prairie Creek. Mr. Lundgren was called to be the first pastor and was ordained the following day. Through his ministry, a mission church in Hordville was started. The first church building was constructed in 1876 at a cost of $800. A new house of worship valued at $8,000 was erected and dedicated on February 27, 1886. This was dismantled in 1952 to make way for our present building.
In 1885, the Swedish Baptist Seminary moved to Stromsburg. It was closed in 1888, moved to Chicago, then later to St. Paul, Minnesota, where it is known as Bethel College and Seminary.
The mission-minded early members started many mission chapels and Sunday schools near town, one in Osceola and one south of Swede Home, as well as the Hordville work. A new church was built during the late 1890s, and the debt on the church building was liquidated. The 30th anniversary of the church was celebrated by entertaining the Baptist General Conference of America.
Linus Johnson assumed the pastorate in September 1929. Money was raised for a new church building, and plans were considered, but action was deferred pending merger talks. This proved to be the last pastorate of the First Baptist Church.
